On February 23, 2022, the General Aviation Manufacturers Association (GAMA) held its annual State of the Industry press conference and released the widely-anticipated 2021 General Aviation Aircraft Shipments and Billing Report.

After enduring a series of challenges spurred by the COVID-19 pandemic, 2021 marked the start of the general aviation industry’s rebound. According to the report, all aircraft segments saw increases in shipments in 2021 compared to 2020, highlighting the strength and resilience of our industry.

Here are a few key findings from the report:

• Piston airplane deliveries increased by 5.5% compared to 2020
• Turboprop airplane deliveries increased 19% compared to 2020
• Business jet deliveries increased 10.2% compared to 2020
• North America remains the leader in piston and turboprop aircraft as well as business jet shipments
• Preliminary aircraft deliveries were valued at $25.2 billion, an increase of 10.2%

While the pandemic brought unprecedented challenges to the aviation industry, it also presented new opportunities. Restrictions and health concerns sparked a growing demand for private air travel, driving new pilots and new buyers to the bizjet segment in particular.

In 2021, the North American market accounted for 65.9% of business jet deliveries, followed by Europe at 18%. During the presentation, it was noted that although GA shipments are not yet collectively back to pre-pandemic levels, many OEMs are registering delivery dates towards the end of 2023 and even 2024 in some cases.

“The strength and tenacity of the general aviation industry has provided a strong foundation for the industry to rebound from pandemic-related setbacks with a powerful showing in 2021,” said Pete Bunce, GAMA President and CEO.

“Total aircraft shipments are converging on figures that were seen before the outset of the pandemic. The industry has been able to weather the storm by strategically managing workforce and supply chain challenges, which unfortunately are still ongoing. Despite this adversity, there is robust interest and excitement in our industry as we continue to further our advancements in innovation, technology and environmental sustainability.”
