Hartzell Receives FAA Certification And Makes First Shipments For JPATS Program

PIQUA, Ohio — June 17, 1998 — Hartzell Propeller Inc. has announced completion of FAA certification as well as the first shipments of its four-bladed, constant speed, turboprop propeller system for the Raytheon Aircraft T-6A Texan II. The company is set to produce the 15 props needed this year and will be ramping up production to meet the nearly 100 props per year that will eventually be required. The JPATS program call for more than 700 aircraft for the US military and 24 for the NATO Flying Training Canada program. In addition, significant additional sales are expected from other foreign military training programs.

Hartzell is on the vast majority of current turboprop and piston engine military trainers around the world and the company called upon this experience when designing a system for the new T-6A. Hartzell also enjoys a long association with US military training. US Navy pilots have trained behind Hartzell props on T34s for more than 25 years … and with the JPATS program … this association will now continue for at least another 20 years.

One of the unique performance requirements for the JPATS aircraft is the ability to maintain a 2G turn at 25,000 ft. Hartzell’s propellers were specifically designed to achieve this performance. Significantly, this performance was achieved while maintaining a very low noise profile which will help with community relations around military training facilities.

The prop uses a new blade profile designed specifically to meet these stringent performance requirements established by the US Navy and Air Force. The propeller is 97″ in diameter and features aluminum blades and hub. It is a member of Hartzell’s growing family of light weight turbine propellers and, as such, it offers proven ruggedness and reliability.
