The Red Bull Air Race will be taking off again tomorrow and Sunday. This weekend’s competition in Gdynia, Poland is the fourth of the 2014 season. You can be excused if you have never heard of Gdynia before. It is one of Poland’s youngest cities, originally founded in 1926. That makes it an infant of a metropolis by European standards. It gives Gdynia a uniquely contemporary flavor, exemplified in the city’s vibrant contemporary arts scene.
Gdynia revolves around a sprawling waterfront marina, as does the weekend’s air race. Contestants have already proven themselves to be peerless artists in their own right in the week’s practice runs. Paul Bonhomme of Great Britain, the defending Red Bull Air Race World Champion, has made a particularly big impression in the pre-competition trials. That fact alone should make for an exciting event, as Bonhomme is currently ranked second in the season’s points rankings. He trails Hannes Arch, The Austrian Ace, by just five points. The two had been closely competitive in the season’s first two races, Abu Dhabi and Rovinj, but Bonhomme failed to make it into the final heat in the season’s third contest, Putrajaya.
Bonhomme is coming to Gdynia with something to prove, and that should make for an incredible weekend in the world’s fastest motorsport. Check out this coverage of Paul’s training session today from the Red Bull Air Race team. He is really pushing “The Claw,” the three-blade composite aerobatic propeller Hartzell designed specifically for the Red Bull Air Racers, to new levels of aviation excellence.
