Proper propeller maintenance is a necessary part of ensuring the safety and performance of your aircraft. From periodic maintenance tasks to complete propeller overhauls, it’s important to be vigilant about the care and maintenance of your prop.

When the time comes to send out your propeller for an overhaul, remember that not all prop shops are alike. Before selecting a propeller repair facility, ask the following questions to determine if the shop is reputable and qualified to service your propeller.

Are the technicians properly trained?

Your propeller is an investment in your aircraft’s performance and safety, which means you want to be sure it’s handled by only professional, experienced technicians. Ask if the facility’s technicians have received training certificates for the type of propeller you have. At Hartzell Propeller, we offer training classes for propeller repair technicians and provide certificates to those that have attended.

What does the overhaul process entail?

There can be significant differences in the standard processes and quality of the equipment used among various prop shops. In general, the overhaul process should be comprehensive and highly meticulous. First, the propeller repair technician will completely disassemble and visually inspect the prop for damage and corrosion. Then, the components of the propeller are cleaned and serviced according to the overhaul manual for the propeller. The blades will each be inspected, measured and refurbished before the propeller is finally reassembled and balanced. Depending on the condition of your prop, the shop may recommend extra services.

When are blade dimensional inspections performed?

Some shops only take measurements before they grind the propeller blade, and not after. Ask that they perform a dimensional inspection after grind to ensure the blade meets the manufacturer’s specifications.

What’s included in the price of the overhaul service?

Price quotes for a propeller overhaul service can vary greatly from shop to shop. Ask to see a complete summary of the items included in the estimated price of the base service, as well as any replacement parts or less common services that might require an additional charge. You don’t want to be surprised when you receive your final invoice!

When it comes to propeller maintenance, it’s always better to be safe than sorry. Take the time to research different propeller repair stations and ask plenty of questions to be sure they have the appropriate qualifications to service your propeller.
